What is a Garden Hose?

By definition, a garden hose is also known as a hosepipe or flexible tube that is used in conveying water. It is usually attached to sprinklers and sprayers with a special attachment to help concentrate water in an area. Most of the time, you will find hoses attached to a tap or spigot.

What is a Garden Hose Made of? What You Need to Know

A garden hose is usually made of synthetic rubber or soft plastic. It is then reinforced with internal fibers that are designed to form like a web. With this material, garden hoses are made flexible and the exterior surface of the hose is designed to be durable so it can pass through rocks, plants, soil, trees and the likes with ease.

They are also made to survive any scraping from concrete surfaces or stones and even being stepped on without getting damaged right away.

Garden hoses are not really designed for hot water and leaving them unattended under the hot sun while under pressure can cause them to burst. They can, however, carry potable water as they are made with NFS international-listed polymers which are pretty safe for water.

Types of Garden Hoses

Perhaps some of you don’t know but there are actually two types of garden hoses used. They can be lightweight or heavyweight depending on where you are going to use them.

  • Lightweight or Light Duty Garden Hoses – these are typically made from vinyl and are usually reinforced with multiple plies or mesh so that it can kink easily. They also have plastic fittings that come in thinner diameters but are sold at a lower price range. If you want to use something within your budget but won’t be using a garden hose often then this is the best option to take. You can find these easily in your local home improvement depot or garden stores and are perfect for light-duty uses.
  • Regular or Heavy Duty Garden Hoses – these are usually made of thick rubber and comes with nickel-plated brass couplings. They are also flexible and can withstand all types of weather and can be used in both hot and cold water.

There are also other types besides the light and heavy-duty ones. These are not usually used but it is still important to know what they are so you know what kind of garden hose you will need in the future. They are as follows:

  • Coiled Hoses – these are usually formed in a tight spiral that can be pulled together when you are not using it. They come in 15 to 25 ft. in length and are only about ½ inch or smaller in diameter. Coiled hoses are stored in a hose reel as they can tangle if not properly kept. They are used best in smaller areas and hand watering plants in your patio or balcony.
  • Flat Hoses – these are similar to the ones used by firefighters but are generally much lighter compared to a fireman’s hose. They can be easily rolled up and are self-draining. They are also easy to store as they take lesser space. Storing them in a hose reel may not be a good idea but you can always roll this up. Flat hoses are also flexible and are usually made of vinyl. However, they puncture easily and have lower burst pressure rating. They are not recommended for garden use.
  • Soaker Hose – this is usually used for irrigation in your garden. They are made of recycled rubber or plastic and are designed with porous walls. Water comes out of these holes when the water is turned on thus allowing the water to seep through the surrounding soil of your garden. They can be directly placed on the ground or buried underneath. They are usually used in large vegetable beds where they are buried around 6 inches or more. Soaker hoses are usually shorter in length which makes them suitable to be buried on the ground.

Now that you know the different types of garden hoses, it’s best to think about what you need for your garden. In this article, we will focus more on the lightweight and heavy-duty garden hoses so you know which ones to get in case you decide to have one for your garden.

Absolutely the best hose ever. I own a horse farm and need several hoses for multiple barns. The Flexzilla outranks all others during all seasons. Just went through several nights in the teens here in Texas. This hose is stored outside. Other hoses became extremely stiff and hard to roll out. The Flexzilla, once the ice inside melted, rolled out smoothly. Works great in all weather, strong, with great reinforcements at both ends. I can’t remember it every kinking. In use for over a year and no signs of degradation. All new hose purchases at the farm will be Flexzilla in the future.

Appy Lover

After years and years of using water hoses for my horses, I have finally found a hose that really does not kink. I love the feel of the hose, it is so soft and flexible even in colder weather. Since this is a recent purchase, I will be waiting to see how it performs and feels during a southern Arizona summer, laying on the ground, baking in the sun. I am expecting it to perform perfectly. When I need to replace another hose, this will be my number one choice.

Bought spring 2024. Currently, fall of 2024. No issues with this hose. Lots of complaints in reviews about kinking and tangling. Sounds like a user error to me. I have no issues. I’m on 2.5 acres so need the length. I have a few geese and chickens so need the pressure to wash out their water containers. With a nozzle, great pressure. It’s been sitting in the sun in OK for a season and zero sign of deterioration. Pretty dang happy. I just added it to the Xmas list for the other side of the property.

MEB

This hose is just what I’d hoped for! Lightweight, moving 100’ ft of hose around the gardens is no longer a struggle, yay! Still gives a good quantity of flow, the negligible difference from the previous wider hose. On kinking issue—on delivery, I followed advice to fill it fully stretched out and leave it in the sun for a day, absolutely no kinks now! I love this hose!

First I think this is a well-made garden hose. second, the spray nozzle works very well, I used it to clean my litter box and the dust on the wall, it gives enough power to clean them well. I love it very much.

I recently started a mobile car detailing business so I was looking for a very long hose yet portable. What I love about this one is that it’s super flexible and lightweight. The traditional hoses are too easy to be bent or tangled up. In the future, I will only buy this type of hose. Absolutely recommended!

Works exactly as advertised. Extends to about 50 feet although I have not measured it. Does not kink at all or get solid to the point of it being hard to move about. I got this in order to be able to connect it to my pressure washer since it had a shut-off valve. I have connected some quick disconnects to the male end in order to be able to switch back and forth with my pressure washer and garden hose sprayer. Looks like it has held up quite well and doesn’t seem to have any leakage issues so far. The great and affordable hose that expands after it has a water flow in it.

Matt

First and most importantly this hose works great. It is very lightweight, compact, and does not kink so it’s perfect when you don’t want the hose out all the time. There is a valve at the end of the hose to turn it on and off which is convenient. It definitely expands with water, though it would be difficult to get the full 50 feet without a significant tug of the hose trying to contract and shrink back down.

7. Gilmour 25034050 Comm Rbr/Vin Hose

This is one garden hose that we must confess has a five out of five-star rating and this is because this hose from the Gilmour brand is one heavy duty and sturdy hose which can be found in most fire stations.

Now that explains how versatile this hose is because it can be used for watering gardens and also fighting fire incidents.

Its high-quality vinyl construction combined with double reinforced rubber construction is the main reason why this product is extremely durable and strong and this garden hose has also won several positive reviews as users who have tried it out all expressed satisfaction with their reviews. Length and power are the main reasons why users are well impressed with this product.

Pros:

  • Has a good length
  • Made using reinforced rubber and the vinyl material
  • Extremely durable

Cons:

  • This hose leaks

About 1.5 months of use so far and it works fine. People complaining about the stiffness never used a stiff hose, I’ll tell you that. This hose isn’t that stiff. If anything its better than “average”. What do you expect? If you want durability, it is only physically logical to assume you’re going to sacrifice maneuverability. I have used stiff hoses (Harbor Freight anybody?) and they’re absolute junk. This hose is excellent and I’m sure it will last a long time.

J. Bruha

This is as good of a ‘red rubber’ hose as I have used. Compared to other ‘red rubber’ commercial hoses, this one seems to be a little stiffer and kink resistant, while still being reasonably flexible. My only gripe with this type of hose is that the outer covering isn’t as ‘slick’ as Gilmour’s premium gray (used to be green) Flexogen hose. If you were reeling hose in and out a lot, I’d spend the extra for the Flexogen. For general use, this one is fine, and for hand-watering a garden might even be better, as it is more flexible.

8. 304 Stainless Steel Garden Hose

If durability is one factor that is being searched for when considering the best garden hose to make do with then this garden hose from Touch Rich is quite an amazing option and after trying out this stainless steel garden hose, certainly, there would good remarks about it from its impressive and outstanding performance. This garden hose comes with an 18 gauge that is tough enough to take as much power from the jump.

Its durability is something that amazes everyone as it is quite resistant to wear and tear. Despite being made using stainless steel material, this garden hose has a lightweight design and it is also the best option if one is looking for a garden hose that is stable and strong.

Pros:

  • Features a stainless steel construction
  • Has a lightweight design
  • Has optimal high pressure
  • Built to be durable
  • Moves with ease
  • Can be rolled with ease

Cons:

  • None

German Shepherd Mama

German shepherds love to chase water and bite hoses. This hose has been German Shepherd tested and I am happy to tell you the results are in. Not one hole! I dont suggest you let your dog play with this hose but it is good to know they can not destroy it with one bite from out typical rubber hoses. I have been converted! I will never buy a rubber hose again. Best buy for me this year. Zues is leaving 5 stars also.

Arizona Sun

Love these lightweight, sturdy hoses. I hate hauling a hose around the yard so started buying the ‘pocket hoses’ with the cloth covering. Because I live in Arizona and have rocks for ‘grass’, the cloth hoses kept getting cut by the rocks or the cactus around the yard. These steel hoses are perfect. I have two of them and will probably buy a third.

9. FOREVER STEEL HOSE 25FT

This is another impressively built garden hose from FOREVER STEEL brand which is a well-known name in the industry that is responsible for the production of several high-quality garden tools.

Just like some garden hose that we have talked about, this right here also holds a lightweight design that enables users to make use of this hose without worrying about hand fatigue. Forever steel made this product quite durable and also easy to use.

This garden hose has made it to our best garden hose review because of the benefits that it brings and reading through some reviews of people that tried it out before, they confessed to how useful it is when it comes to watering plants and despite being heavy-duty, it can also be stored easily.

Pros:

  • Made using stainless steel material
  • Built to be durable and reliable
  • Very easy to make use of
  • Lightweight

Cons:

  • Leaks heavily after few months of use

Really solid construction and surprisingly light. My mom ruins garden hoses, she kinks them, can’t roll the heavy-duty hoses (the lighter duty ones die even sooner) on the hose reel and she went thru 2 expanding hoses in one month. So far, this hose has survived and she loves it.

Connie

By far my favorite water hose! Light as a feather, slides like a charm thru any kind of landscape, no more lugging/yanking/or fighting w/ water hoses in the sweltering heat! This is the 1st water hose I looked forward to using instead of it being a chore except for those light fabric kinds, but those always burst & I didn’t get much use from them compared to this steel hose. Liked it so much I got one for my mother to water all her gazillion flowers so she isn’t struggling out there in sweltering heat w/ other water hoses.

10. Water Right Professional Coil Garden Hose

This is the final product that we want to take a look at and also this is a product that we believe has what it takes to be among the best. The Water Right Professional Coil Garden Hose is quite different from a lot of garden hose products on the market and this is sole because of the well-engineered stretch system that makes it possible for water to flow easily as well as providing adequate stretch.

There are also machines brass chrome-plated fittings which help in providing a long-lasting varnish finish that makes sure there are no cases of lead pollution whenever water tends to pass through this hose. Watching this hose function is certainly a marvelous sight to behold.

Pros:

  • Designed to be extremely flexible
  • Built to be very reliable and durable
  • Features a well-engineered stretch system

Cons:

  • Failed to extend well

I absolutely love this hose. It uses the perfect amount of coil maneuverability and strength. I bought the 75’ length and it reached where I need it. It retains its shape by placing it back carefully along my faucet wall. The pressure is limited to what you use as a sprayer. I have the typical gun sprayer and it offers me exactly what I need. Too many plants to take photos. But you get the idea

Tehachapi

I had bought hoses at the beginning of this season and one has already popped its covering. I wanted a coil hose because it’s easier to deal with after watering and it came in a size that I can find repair parts if needed but the hoses are very well made. The only thing is I wish the company also sold a holder for this type of hose. Last year I bought a similar hose which lasted only one season but it came with a wall holder and works great but I can’t find the holders without having to buy it as a set. That would have been great for a first-time buyer of this type of hose. I bought two so I have to improvise with the second hose. But it is a fantastic hose and I would recommend it.

How to Find the Right Kind of Garden Hose

Have you noticed how hard it is to shop for items these days? You are presented with various options and everything seemed to be the “one” you need. Confusing, right? However, it doesn’t have to be.

When you are shopping for a garden hose, there are only a few things you need to remember so you don’t get confused. These are as follows:

  • Know the material it is made of – are you looking for something that is going to be used exclusively in your garden? Are you planning to use something that is safe for drinking water? With the variety of hoses in the market, it’s easy to be confused but to avoid that; you need to check out the materials that the hose is made of. If you are not going to use it often then find something cheap. A garden hose made with pvc or vinyl is ideal; if you want something that can be used for drinking as well then avoid ones that are made with the latter materials. If you don’t know then ask for assistance. Shopping for garden hose will be a lot easier by then.
  • Know the length – there are short hoses and long ones. If you only have a small yard then something around 30 feet can work but if you have a wide garden then buying something around 50 feet to a 100 can do the trick.
  • Know what is in demand/popular brands – in-demand garden hoses are usually ones that work well for customers. See if you can find something that fits the description and compare it to other brands so you can narrow down your choices.
  • Know the type of garden hose you need – are you in need of a flat hose? How about lightweight? Do you need something heavy-duty? Listing down the type of garden hose you want will be a lot easier to determine what type you should buy.
  • Know the most recommended – if you don’t have any experience in buying a garden hose then ask for advice. Nothing is wrong with asking for an opinion. This will give you better options to look at when shopping.

Final Conclusion

Buying a garden hose should not be a problem as there are so many choices out there. However, if you are to buy one, make sure that it’s the right one so you don’t waste your time and money. You must also take care of your garden hose if you want it to last longer.

It doesn’t matter how expensive or cheap your garden hose is; as long as you are careful with your things, it will last a long time. Which ones do you like best? We hope that you find this best garden hose review helpful, enjoy your shopping!
