Los Angeles Temptation wins Lingerie Bowl VII

February 8th, 2010

4928_531350707025_26400902_31402372_5005785_nShades of the 2007 New England Patriots were eerily on display Super Bowl Sunday in South Florida as the Chicago Bliss were upset by Los Angeles following an undefeated season. The thousands in attendance and the millions that watched tonight were expecting the Bliss to continue their championship run behind their power run game and a solid 85 Bears-like defense.

The LFL season culminated with perhaps one of the best games of the season with two heavy-weights that had each other on the ropes from the opening kickoff as the camera bulbs flashed. The Bliss wasted little time completing a touchdown pass on a reverse to Kat Johns at the 16:06 mark of the 1st half going up 7-0. Having watched a lot of film on Chicago, Temptation Nation understood they could not afford to fall behind early and responded with a ball-control drive that was capped by Game MVP Ali Eastlake’s touchdown run at 13:34 notching up the game at 7-7. Chicago responded with a clock-eating drive  that included a lot of Tasha ‘The Tank’ Pryor, the drive was finished off by The Tank with a TD run at 9:50 giving Chicago a 14-7 lead. Then Ali came back at Frasier with Los Angeles responding with yet another balanced attack drive that was masterfully handled by Eastlake and capped with a Monique Gaxiola touchdown run at 4:12 mark but failed on a crucial extra point making the score 14-13. After the LA score, Chicago made a run before the half getting the ball inside the Los Angeles 2yard line with a First & Goal. Luckily for LA there is a lot of film this season on The Tank and Chicago’s short yardage offense. Temptation’s defensive coordinator Tui Suiamona licked his chops and barked at his All-Fantasy linebackers Monique Gaxiola and Michele Jacot to key on The Tank. Chicago tried running The Tank in on multiple plays and were shut down on perhaps the key turning point in the game.

Opening the 2nd half, both defenses really settled down and shut down the offensive fireworks of the 1st half. Chicago’s Deborah Poles and Monique Gaxiola shined leading their defenses with a final 17 minutes to a Lingerie Bowl championship on the line. Chicago struggled getting any offense going with a playbook that was well scouted by Los Angeles which included sweep runs and screen passing. LFL’s Offensive Player of the Year Saran Dunmore despite her incredible regular season numbers could not shake the multitude of LA defenders in the backfield on almost every play. Chicago was simply dominated up front giving Cartabiano little time to find receivers down the field, she was often face-first into the turf including a key Reese Mathews sack at the 2:32 mark that turned the ball over on downs to Los Angeles. The tide turned following the Mathews sack as Temptation Nation drove right down the field with a final nail in the Bliss coffin coming at the 1:36 mark with another Eastlake touchdown run making the score 27-14.

Chicago tried rallying with a final minute drive but once again stalled inside the Los Angeles 5yd line, leaving a total of 14 points on the field on the night.

Despite the Bliss’ magical undefeated season run, the night belonged to Temptation Nation who simply appeared more prepared and determined to win the Lingerie Bowl championship. Tinseltown will certainly be rocking tonight as Los Angeles’ only pro football team has won on football’s biggest stage.

Revisiting with Shannon Bennett

February 8th, 2010

by Troy Whigham, with Shannon Bennett

Profile pic

Ten years ago, Shannon Bennett was on her way to the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

An accomplished marksman, she had qualified for the US Olympic shooting team in the Skeet and Trap Shooting event, a sport which requires speed, discipline, self-control, nerves of steel, and phenomenal hand-eye coordination. Training since she was 14 years old, she had already won Olympic gold – twice – in the Junior Olympics and was preparing for what could be the most important sporting event of her life.

That is, until the death of her coach.

Grieving the loss of the man she considered a second father, she decided to miss the Olympic Games.

To cope, she starting giving shooting lessons to children at a local range, teaching them the same skills that her coach had taught her. It helped her to see the progress that they were making, even as she herself progressed through her grief.

But Shannon wasn’t just an expert triggerman.

“I have played sports my whole life. Growing up I took dance and gymnastics for eleven years at Kim Hall School of Dance in Brandon. I was the head cheerleader at Dowell Junior High for both 8th and 9th grades, and I ran track. I also played Little League Fast Pitch Softball as a catcher, starting when I was 10 years old, and continued playing at Durant High School and into my college days at the Plant City campus of Hillsborough Community College. After college I played on various co-ed softball teams.”

And then, ten years after turning her back on Olympic gold …

“My best friend and I were driving home from a long day of shopping and I heard a radio commercial asking something along the lines of “Are you pretty, athletic, and want to play football? Come to the St. Pete Times Forum and try-out for the Tampa Breeze Lingerie Football League team!” I remember saying to myself ‘AWESOME’! I love football! Always have. I used to tell my dad if only I was a boy, I could play FOOTBALL! I called my dad and said, “Dad, I’m going to play football after all!” (leaving out the ‘in lingerie’ part, of course. Ha!)”

Practice
Practicing on the weakside end position

She went to the try-outs. They saw that she was fast and had good coordination. Her athletic ability, along with her cheerleader-good looks, earned her a spot on the inaugural Tampa Breeze full-contact football team. With her speed, discipline, nerves of steel, and lightning-quick reflexes, she was a natural lineman, playing strongside blocker on running plays, and outlet receiver on passing plays. On defense, she showed her proficiency at strongside end and linebacker, her strikingly blonde hair streaming like a waterfall from under her black helmet.

Against Miami
Shannon is #11, seen here in the game against Miami

She played so well in the Breeze home opener that she became the first player inducted onto the All-Whigham team. While not exactly Olympic gold, it is still an acknowledgement of her athletic ability; it just happens to not be in any sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee. This award was earned on the football field.

Do you have any problems walking around in public?

“I have been recognized in public a few times in the Tampa area. At (a local supermarket) the bag boy said ‘Hey, you’re the football chick!” He then explained how he and his father attended our first football game and LOVED IT! Smiling from ear to ear I said ‘Yeah, thank you for supporting us, and remember, our next game is January 15’. The next time I was recognized was at the Tampa Hard Rock casino playing black jack. The gentlemen at my black jack table, sitting three seats down, asked if I was number 11 for the Breeze. In total shock I responded ‘Yes’, trying to keep my mind on the next card to be dealt. I then hit a black jack! YAYA! I gave the man at the table a high five and delightfully responded ‘GO BREEZE!’”

In a season of wins and losses, what is your most memorable moment?

“My fondest memory this season was the locker room dance off right before the Miami game. The girls had a new type of energy in the air. We were the underdogs, yet not one teammate would settle for that title. We were mentally and physically ready to, as coach would say, ‘grind’ from start to finish. Every football player was ready to ball their hearts out. The energy in the locker room made it very clear that a loss was absolutely not an option. We as a team, as a family, knew our tasks at hand and it was almost as if we could feel each others’ heartbeat. It was a very profound moment. I’ll always look back and remember that moment right before the Miami game. The Tampa Breeze became more than just a team of football players. That moment we became sisters!”

Looking back, what would you consider your proudest accomplishment?

DaBoys

“The proudest accomplishment of my life is without a doubt my twin boys. Kaden and Keanu are the two most amazing little boys in the world. They bring a whole new meaning to the words unconditional love. I give total credit to the Lord, for blessing me with, healthy, smart, loving and absolutely adorable children. They have recently taken an interest in the Haiti disaster and asked if they can both send their piggy banks over to help the children in need. Kaden has started making cards to tell them he loves them. He has a total of twenty-two cards that we will soon mail. Keanu has asked Jesus every night while saying bedtime prayers to make sure Haiti people don’t feel hungry. Words cannot express the pride I, their mother, hold. Kaden and Keanu are, and will always be, the very best part of me. Thank you, boys, for making me the Happiest Mommy in the world! I am so proud to be your mom.”

You were hurt in your first game and had to be carried off the field, but you came back the following week against Philadelphia and finished the season against Miami. Would you recommend playing tackle football to girls?

“I would defiantly recommend playing football to a group of young girls. Team sports in general offer a tremendous amount of responsibility. For example: showing up promptly for practices, games, and special charity events; it teaches the importance of punctuality. Trusting other teammates to perform their task and knowing your position and job, even if you’re not the person in the lime light, teaches trust and the true meaning of team networking. Sweating, fighting, and falling face down, then having friends that pick you up, dust you off, and say do it again… well that makes friends that will last a life time. Team sports have made me the individual I am today.”

And that’s really saying something, coming from a two-time medalist who was, at one point in her life, on her way to the Olympics.

Long live sport.

Los Angeles and Chicago ready to entertain millions of fans during halftime of the Super Bowl

February 6th, 2010

Posted by Matt Field

The spotlight of Super Bowl Sunday will be shining bright on Los Angeles and Chicago as they take to the gridiron for the annual Super Bowl halftime championship game, Lingerie Bowl VII. Both teams come into the game with expectations of hoisting the LFL championship trophy in South Florida.

Los Angeles Temptation (4-1) will feature an incredible defense while Chicago Bliss (4-0) will try to capture the championship behind their blue-collar running game. With both teams having deep rosters, the difference in the game will be each team’s ability to play on the big stage of Super Bowl Sunday.

Temptation Nation will showcase an offensive attack featuring the Brunette Bandits which includes running backs Alisha Lucik, Stephanie Psick and Monique Gaxiola. Los Angeles’ Head Coach David Bizub’s play calling will include misdirection running and screen passing. Although Los Angeles struggled earlier in the season with inconsistent play, the Temptation are finally cranking on all cylinders behind their quarterback Ali Eastlake and an improved offensive line anchored by Nicole Jahnke and Reese Mathews.

Defensively, Los Angeles is ranked No.2 in the league and that is because of their All-Fantasy linebackers in Monique Gaxiola and Michele Jacot. Both Gaxiola and Jacot will need to have career games against Chicago’s two-headed monster, running backs Tasha ‘The Tank’ Pryor and Saran Dunmore. The late season addition of corner back Kristina Coker will help against Chicago’s run game, Coker is a fierce hitter.

While Los Angeles is fortunate to be playing in the Lingerie Bowl behind a late season resurgence, the Chicago Bliss expected to be in South Florida in early February. The Bliss will have an opportunity to finish a magical inaugural season being the only undefeated team in the LFL. While they have not been dominant this season, they have found ways to win. Head Coach Keith Hac has developed a championship blue-print that includes a great running game complimented by a good defense. Look for Chicago’s offense to feature The Tank and spell her with Saran Dunmore. While quarterback Elle Cartabiano has shown signs of becoming a franchise quarterback, at this stage in her career Chicago cannot count on her to win the game with her arm. Much like LA, Chicago will also use a lot of screen passing. Look for wide receiver Deborah Poles to be the recipient of most of those screens.

The Lingerie Bowl championship will ultimately come down to one phase in the game for both teams, can Chicago run on LA’s front three and can LA stop Chicago’s 1-2 punch of The Tank and Dunmore?

Ambition: Tina Caccavale

February 4th, 2010

by Troy Whigham, with Tina Caccavale and Susan Caccavale

Profile -front

It was a balmy day in south Florida; a great day to be outdoors. The sun was shining. The palms were swaying with a light tropical breeze. In local parlance, it was “a good beach day”.

But Tina Caccavale wasn’t going to the beach. She was looking for a place to park her truck at Dolphins Stadium. After all, she was a season-ticket holder and she was trying to get to the Miami Dolphins game before kick-off.

“I was having trouble finding parking and some guys moved their truck over for mine to fit right in next to theirs. I thanked them and this guy yelled out ‘Hey! You look like that girl Tina that plays football on that Lingerie League!’ I smiled and he said, ‘Yeah! I saw you killing them on the field! You’re like a Randy Moss out there, girl!’ It was great. Then all the kids and some of the guys were asking for my autograph.  I had LFL flyers and a sharpie on me so I signed flyers for them. They loved it!”

It’s no wonder she was recognized. At the time, she led the LFL in tackles, receptions, and interceptions. It’s kind of hard to be incognito when your name is at the top of three charts, offensively and defensively, and the only LFL player to do so.

Getting to the top of three charts isn’t easy. Not even for a girl that plays like Randy Moss.

But Tina did it.

“Growing up with two older brothers, I played literally just about every sport. I played organized basketball, softball, hockey, soccer, volleyball, swimming, and flag football. There was a time when I played on three different teams at once and my parents would take me from one practice to the next on the same day.”

By the time she got to high school, she was playing basketball, softball, and volleyball on the varsity teams, starting all four years in all three sports at Plantation High. Her athleticism didn’t go unnoticed, and she was offered (and accepted) athletic scholarships in basketball and softball to Broward Community College and Nova Southeastern University, where she graduated with a degree from the university’s College of Dental Medicine.

A year later, she settled into her career as a dental assistant.

But when you’ve played college-level athletics in two sports, you tend to miss the feeling of competition and camaraderie that comes with playing a team sport.

And that’s when the LFL entered her life.

Profile pic

“I truly have a strong passion for football. I always have and always will. I have been playing organized flag and tackle football for nine years now. I also model in my spare time, so when I heard of models playing tackle football, I wanted to be on the team so bad. It’s right up my alley. I LOVE playing football!”

She went to try-outs. She stood in line. She filled out forms. She did the drills. It was worth it.

warmups

It was worth it because every good receiver needs a good quarterback to throw her the ball, and she was about to get the best one in the Eastern conference.

She was about to get Anonka Dixon.

“Having Anonka ‘Ms. Make It Happen’ Dixon as my QB has made me a better receiver because she has a ridiculously strong arm. Her throws are consistent and she’s a very smart player. She knows me well, and my speed, so she knows exactly where to place the ball to lead me to six more on the score board.”

So has Tina always been a talented athlete?

I asked her mom.

“She has two older brothers, Tony and Paul, and all our kids are 18 months apart, so when they played there already was competition between them. The boys were active in sports – baseball and football mostly – and Tina was always at the park with us for practices and games as Bob and I did a lot of coaching for the kids leagues. Tina was always practicing playing whatever sport we were into during the year, and she was always good. She had a natural perseverance to be as good as her older brothers!”

Any good stories?

“Tina was signed up for coach-pitch baseball, and she was the only girl in the whole league. She was ready to go to bat and my husband spoke up and said to the head coach, ‘You better back the outfield out further.’ The head coach thought that was funny and said, ‘Sure, Dad’ with a chuckle. Then the ball was pitched. Tina wailed it over the outfielders’ heads and ran the bases for a HOMERUN! The first of the team to do it. After the season, when they composed an All-Star team, they approached the head coach and said ‘We want that girl Tina and any other 2 boys you got!’”

In a word, how would you describe your daughter?

”Describing Tina in one word was a tough one, but her father an I agreed: AMBITIOUS. We have always taught her to ‘Never give up’ and ‘Try, try your hardest at everything you do’. And Tina truly has always loved sports and whether it is in her endeavors of life or on a field, she has always been ambitious and never gives up.”

Ambition. Perseverance. Never give up. The very same qualities that lead a person to success in any task put before them; the same qualities that would put a player on the All-Whigham team.

Ms. Caccavale, welcome.

Long live sport.

Matt Field- How did you enjoy the first regular season of LFL play? Highlights/ Lowlights?

Danielle Moinet- The first regular season of the LFL was more than I ever expected! We put in so much work the year before and it was worth every minute of it when we stepped foot on opening day September 4th. Hearing the crowd of thousands cheer our name gave me goosebumps. I’ll always have the memories of this past season and it wouldn’t be the same without my amazing, beautiful teammates that make up the Bliss!

Matt- How have you been preparing for the playoffs?

Danielle- I’ve been in the gym 5 days a week on top of our three days a week practice. I’ve stepped up my cardio and also studying film! I can’t wait to get down to Miami!

Matt- What have you been doing in your downtime?

Danielle- Haha…downtime? I wasnt aware that I had downtime!

Matt- You have played a big part in the team’s success this year, what do you bring to the game that helps the team win?

Danielle- The great thing about this Chicago team is that each girl has evolved during the season and each teammate is a huge part of our success! I bring to every game my positive attitude, encouragement, and leadership. I want to bring the best out of every one of my teammates so we can perform to our highest ability every friday night we play!

Matt- Strangest event/fan/comment from any of the games or events?

Danielle- We had three fans at our last game who came all the way from Japan! I was extremely flattered that they came all that way to see us play!

Matt- Your Super Bowl pick?

Danielle- Saints all the way! Who Dat?!

Matt- And of course, who will win Lingerie Bowl VII?

Danielle- Not even a doubt in my mind…The Chicago Bliss takes it all! See ya’ll on Saturday!

Rob Neumann: A cynic’s guide to Super Bowl Sunday

February 1st, 2010
96146222-430x296Ahh, Super Bowl Sunday.  The greatest day of the year.  Unless, of course, you’re a Minnesota Viking fan.  Then it’s just plain torture.  But enough about me, let’s talk about this year’s Super Bowl.  Peyton Manning’s Forehead and the Indianapolis Colts against Drew Brees and that thing on his face.  Oh, and the New Orleans Saints are there too.

Why do I think this game is going to be a giant letdown?  Well, there are a few reasons.

1) The Vikings aren’t there.  I love you, Brett Favre, but for the love of God, DON’T THROW ACROSS YOUR BODY WITH 30 SECONDS TO GO IN THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!!!!!!!.  Oh, and would someone please remove Brad Childress’ head from his ass.  Thank you.  This game ended a week ago and I’m still not over it.  Then again, the 1999 NFC championship was over 11 years ago, and I’m not over that either.  We here in Minnesota are incredibly good at holding onto things like this.   It’s probably why a majority of us are alcoholics.  But I digress….

2)  The Saints defense is so incredibly overrated.  Peyton Manning’s Forehead (PMF) is going to tear this defense apart.  Yes, they’re opportunistic, and they’re going to take every shot they can at PMF, whether it be on a blitz or just a good ol’ cheap shot.  There’s a funny thing about PMF though.  If you watched the AFC championship, the New York Jets beat the ever living hell out of him in that first half.  So what happened?  PMF got pissed off, and absolutely destroyed the BEST DEFENSE in football the second half of that game.  Do you know where the Saints rank on that scale?  Twenty-Five.  Out of 32.  Last I checked, being number 1 was a hell of a lot better than number 25.

3)  Darren Sharper.  Quite possibly the most overrated football player in the history of the world.  Yes, he makes big plays.  Yes, he does that stupid little “Sharper Shake” after he makes one of those big plays.  What you don’t see is how often he gambles and screws up.  Trust me, I watched this for 4 years in Minnesota.  Mark my words, he will gamble on Sunday at the wrong time, and PMF will make him pay for it.  I can’t wait to see it.  If you hear a loud, cackling laugh after a Colts touchdown on Sunday, it’s probably me.  And I apologize for that.  Sort of.

4) No women in skimpy outfits playing the greatest sport in the world.  I mean, come on, what’s better than incredibly good looking women that are half dressed playing football?  If you can find this, please email me, call me, facebook me, page me, SOS me, morse code…..whatever it takes. Get all your LingerieBowl VII access and information here.

Now, could the Saints win this game?  Sure.  It could happen.  Never say never in football.  But when it comes down to it, go with the team that expected to be there, not the team that is just happy to be there.  The Saints are thrilled to be in this game, and will surely enjoy the ride.  PMF and the Colts?  They expected to be here, prepared all year to be here, and won’t be distracted by all the hoopla.  As much as it pains me, I’m going to take PMF and the Colts as winners.  31-17.

One more thing, for all you Viking fans out there.  When you inevitably start drinking at 9am on Super Bowl Sunday (as opposed to the normal start time of noon) and you start to think about how the Vikings should be here and all that, just remember that it could be worse.  We could be Detroit Lions fans.

Road to the Playoffs, Eastern Conference

February 1st, 2010

by Justin Trujillo

The road to the playoffs has been just as difficult for the Eastern Conference as it has been for the Western. I have already gone over the path the Dallas Desire and Los Angeles Temptation have taken towards the Lingerie Bowl, but now it is time to look at the Chicago Bliss and hometown favorite Miami Caliente.

At the start of the season, no one was really sure what to expect from the Chicago Bliss. They were considered to be in the pack of teams that could make the playoffs but the favorite in the preseason for the East was the Philadelphia Passion. Chicago opened the LFL season and had a much different Miami team than the current one visit the windy city and get rocked (29-19).

Chicago then was scheduled to travel to New York but due to scheduling problems and location of the game, the game was canceled and neither team was awarded a win or loss. The Bliss then traveled to Tampa Bay to face a talented Breeze team. It was tough game but the Bliss came out on top and won (27-18). Their final game was important for both the Bliss and Philadelphia and the Bliss took it to the Passion and ended their playoff dreams while solidifying their own. The rolled the Passion (46-19) and ended the season undefeated. They went from a team with many questions to a contender to a favorite to win the Lingerie Bowl. They are looking to continue their good fortune and end the season undefeated as champions.

Chicago’s opponent on Thursday may not have had a winning record but won just as many impressive games over the course of the season as the Bliss. The Miami Caliente opened the season strong and was considered a team that would be building and be contenders down the road. However, they bypassed expectations and made the playoffs. They opened at Chicago where the Bliss was in control all game and they never stood a chance to win. Miami than made statements in their performance with a shocking underdog win at Philadelphia (37-26).

No one knew if Miami was a contender or pretender but they hosted New York and said they are here to win. The demolished the Majesty with a convincing winning margin (49-7) where it seemed like nothing would stop them. The season ended with instate rival Tampa Bay coming to Miami and pulling off a upset of their own. Miami lost the game (28-18) but won enough tiebreakers to be invited into the playoffs. The Lingerie Bowl is going to be played in Miami and the Caliente will be hoping that a hometown crowd and that being in their own backyard will play to their advantage.

Each Conference in the East and West should be hard fought battles and championship week is projecting to have the best football yet.

Road to the Playoffs, Western Conference

February 1st, 2010

by Justin Trujillo

We are in the final week of the 2009-10 LFL season as playoffs begin and by the end of the week we will crown a new Lingerie Bowl champion. Over the course of the last five months 10 teams from across the country battled it out and we are down to the final four.

Representing the Western Conference is the Dallas Desire and the Los Angeles. Dallas comes in as the number one seed finishing the regular season with a record of (3-1). Los Angeles waited until the last week of the season to clinch playoffs and finished (3-1) and beat out the Seattle Mist in a tiebreaker on points scored to make the playoffs.

Dallas’ road to the playoffs started strong and they had a little slip at the end. The Desire opened the season with a home win versus the Denver Dream. Defense was the story in that game and they were able to contain a very talented team to 6 points and won 20-6. Dallas then travel to San Diego and put on a clinic as they ran all over the Seduction and won easily 40-6.

They had their last home game and beat the Temptation, who will have a shot at revenge Thursday, by a score of (28-12).  Their season ended with a tough loss up in Seattle in front of a loud crowd and had their worst offense performance of the season (12-28).  Dallas is capable of scoring and their defense showed at times that is could shut teams down. With a final record of (3-1), Dallas was at the start of the season and still is a favorite to win the Lingerie Bowl.

The Temptation season was not as easy going as the Desires. Los Angeles opened the season on the road in Denver where they trailed the entire game until the final minutes. Los Angles stole the game in Denver and won (26-19) in a nail biter. Los Angeles then traveled to Dallas and lost in a one sided match.

If the Temptation was going to make the playoffs they were going to need to win out and they did just that. Their final two games were at home and the won their home opener over Seattle (26-20) in a back and forth game. Then the playoff clincher came the last week of the season as they dominated the Seduction (53-0) and booked their ticket to Miami. The Temptation will be the team coming in with the most momentum and they should look to carry that into playoffs.

This championship week will have the teams busy. The teams will be in Miami where the NFL and LFL championships will be determined by weeks end. The teams are scheduled for media day on Wednesday and then we have the Conference games Thursday night. Friday is an off day for preparation, and then on Saturday there is a black tie affair where the LFL will hand out season awards. The accumulation of the season is Sunday, as the winner of the Conference games will face in the 7th Lingerie Bowl at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.
